Why Grass Fed Lamb is Better

Here at Burts Catering Butchers, all our grass fed Lamb is 100% British, reared outdoors, and truly delicious. Let’s get into the many benefits of grass fed livestock and answer the question of why grass fed lamb is better.

The simple answer is that lambs grazing in a grass pasture have 14% less fat and around 8% more protein when compared to grain-fed lamb. This decrease in fat content allows for more antioxidants, vitamins and an overall healthier, happier lamb.

An organic, outdoor reared lamb lives a healthy life freely grazing on open pastures. What’s more, is that they were always designed to eat grass, it’s one of the largest parts of their natural diet.

Why Grass Fed Lamb is Better

Being grass-fed is not only better for the animal but better for you! Lamb raised on a natural diet of grass has a much more intense flavour than those raised on a grain diet. The grassy flavour, known as “pastoral flavour,” comes from an increased amount of indoles, found in the fat tissues.

Essentially, the flavour comes down to chemistry and the amount of fat in the meat. This chemistry can be altered to get a slightly different taste. For example, in America sheep often start off on a grass diet but switch to grain later in life. This leads to a change in the composition of the animal’s fat, causing slightly sweeter-tasting meat.

Why You Should Eat More Lamb

Lamb is a fantastic source of iron. Iron is a key component in red blood cells which carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. Without enough iron, there aren’t enough red blood cells to transport oxygen. Being a red meat, lamb is brimming with a huge amount of iron, especially when compared to other sources of protein.

Additionally, lamb is excellent at boosting your immune system. Loaded with zinc, lamb is excellent at building proteins, healing damaged tissue and supporting a strong immune system.

Finally, the most important reason you should eat more lamb is because of how amazing it tastes. Lamb is extremely tender and floods your mouth with divine juices as you eat it. It’s unlike any other meat available!
