Across the United States, Canada and Australia, the month of July is named as ‘Hot Dog Month’ (as officially titled by the North America Meat Institute). They also mark 22nd July as ‘Hot Dog Day’. This is a day where everything about the hot dog is celebrated, and unofficial festivals and celebrations take place.
Whilst this isn’t an official day in the UK, we thought we’d take a look at this brilliant meal, and celebrate it as our one of our cornerstone foods of a great BBQ.
You might find that there are many different ways of cooking the sausage for your hot dog. You could grill it, put it in the oven, fry it, or even poach it.
All of these methods produce a well-cooked sausage for a hot dog. Grilling and frying often give you a crispier skin, whereas poaching cooks the sausage more gently. However, poaching is mainly for sausages such as frankfurters, which already come pre-cooked (and obviously are not part of our extensive range of meats that we sell!)
When it comes to what meat to go for in your sausage, you have a wide range of choices. According to the American National Hot Dog and Sausage Council; the sausage should at least be smoked and preferably made from Pork. If you want to take a look at some of the great British sausages you could put in your hot dog; take a look at our roundup of Great British Bangers.
You may be surprised to find out that there are certain rules on topping order and how you should eat your hot dog. The American Hot Dog and Sausage Council state that toppings should go after the sausage. Toppings should also be placed in the following order; relish, onions, sauerkraut, cheese, and seasoning.
Hot dogs should also always be consumed using a paper napkin, and not a cloth napkin, and china or glass crockery should be avoided.
